For The Precursors, I designed the lighting for the English-language premiere of Luis Sorolla's apocalyptic fairytale, later presented at the Montreal Fringe Festival. The play follows three children left alone in the forest after the collapse of civilization, tasked with preserving humanity's stories while gradually questioning the nature of the world around them. The lighting design was developed to support both the passage of time and the increasingly uncertain reality of the characters' world.

Throughout the production, the lighting traces the progression from morning to day to night, grounding the audience in the rhythm of the natural world while subtly shifting toward a more artificial visual language as the story unfolds. Cue transitions were intentionally structured with a sense of precision and constructedness, reflecting the possibility that the characters exist within a fabricated environment or experiment. Handheld flashlights, operated by the performers, became an extension of the storytelling itself, creating intimate moments in which light functioned as both a practical source and a narrative device.

A unique challenge of the production was designing the entire system using only conventional fixtures. The Montreal Fringe venue did not provide LED lighting, requiring color, atmosphere, and visual variety to be achieved entirely through fixture selection, focus, gel choices, and carefully timed cueing. Working within those limitations reinforced the importance of thoughtful composition and demonstrated how a flexible lighting design can emerge from relatively simple equipment.
